A bit over two years ago I was getting ready to attend
Canberra’s first Walk Together, but had a baby that day instead. Tomorrow I’ll be joining thousands of
Australians in Walk Together marches across Australia to communicate that
refugees are welcome here.
I’ll be walking tomorrow - in no small part - because when I
hear of children who become labelled “refugees”, I can’t help but think how privileged my children are with labels affixed by a wealthy country: “healthy”, “educated”, “nourished”, “treasured”.
Also, I know my personality, and I know my husband’s, and I
have no doubt we would be those people - desperately trying to seek safe
haven. And our family and friends would
think of us as heroes, not criminals.
Join a Walk Together march on Saturday 25 October 2014 in
your closest city: Walk Together
